One Woman's War is the story of a remarkable woman who made a valuable contribution to her country and to the history of World War II. As a young officer in the British WAAF, Eileen Younghusband was assigned to the Filter Rooms of Fighter Command, Britain's secret nerve center for Radar's defense against enemy aircraft. The Filter Rooms were so secret that they were not officially recognized until long after the war. Working round-the-clock shifts underground, in difficult conditions, she and her fellow officers, most of whom were young women, had instantly to interpret data from overlapping radar information to detect which incoming aircraft were hostile. It was their vital work which helped to make optimum use of Britain's scarce resources of planes and pilots. A few weeks after her marriage she was posted to Belgium to help detect the launch sites of the V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets which were raining down on Britain after the D-Day invasion. Mrs Younghusband tells about her life in wartime with frankness and sensitivity. This book is a notable addition to the history of World War II and to women's role in the fight against fascism.
One Woman's War shows World War II from the WAAF officers perspective. The author places the reader in the filter room and even in the thoughts of those huddled around the plotting tables as they calculate the destination of German aircraft crossing the English Channel. The narrative brings the reader into the thick of the fighting for the defense of London, and one can almost feel the horror at witnessing firsthand the liberation of a concentration camp. There are more occasions, however, when the reader observes the action at a distance as the dedicated plotters receive partial information from those reporting in from coastal radar installations. Retelling the air battles of World War II from a WAAF officers perspective provides us a glimpse of history often untold due to the officers being sworn to secrecy for 30 years at the conclusion of hostilities, and the sense of pride felt by those providing a nations civilian population warning of the approach of the first Nazi V2 Rockets.
